The Rocking S is a complex of artist studios, home to 20+ artists. We have both private and shared studios, ceramic facilities, and a common courtyard. Studio spaces can be rented, when available, month to month, and also for short term projects and exhibitions. We are currently full, but vacancies come up regularly. We host regular artist video nights, open studios, critique groups and talks. In Summer 2023 we will host our first artist-in-residence. There are three studio buildings, all studios have 24 hr access, onsite building manager, wifi, A/C, electricity and access to bathrooms. Work sinks are located in the courtyard. The east building houses our ceramic facility. Studios are open to any professional artist working in any discipline. Kindness and mutual respect are required.
Artist in Residence
The artist in residence is housed in an onsite, refurbished vintage trailer. The residency includes a private studio and access to the ceramic studio. FAQ
All studios have 24-hour access. Artists are responsible for their transportation to and from Phoenix, living expenses, food, and art supplies. We have shared tools and equipment that are available for a visiting artist. The ranch is in an urban part of Phoenix, within walking distance to a grocery store and a hardware store. We are close to a bus route. The ideal applicant is a professional artist, or writer, working in any medium, who does not reside in the greater Phoenix area. The artist should be able to work independently and open to explore Phoenix and the extraordinary natural environment of Arizona.
There are no fees for the residency, or to apply. We do not offer a stipend. We would like you to offer an artist talk or workshop, and we will arrange for curator visits if you are interested. To apply, please send a letter of interest, a CV, 10-20 images of current work, or links to video work, or a selection of your writing. two professional references, and a link to your Instagram or website. Of you are a writer, performance artist, or work in film/video/sound, please email to talk about how we should best understand your work. We are open to artist stays of two weeks to three months. Longer stays will be considered.
